The BVS 5000 is the most widely used mechanical cardiac assist device for patients with a potentially recoverable heart.
The BVS 5000 was the first external/outside the body (extracorporeal) ventricular assist device on the market and is the most widely used bridge to recovery device with systems located in more than 700 institutions throughout the world.
The BVS 5000 has supported thousands of patients ranging from 8 to 84 years old in over 500 medical centers. It was the first FDA-approved device for the support of all patients with reversible heart failure.
The BVS 5000 can support one or both sides of the failing heart and can be operated with one of three ABIOMED consoles, the BVS5000i, BVS5000t and the AB5000 Console. The BVS Blood Pumps use the same cannula as the AB5000 Ventricle allowing for seamless transition of devices without requiring an additional surgical procedure. The BVS 5000 is designed to provide short-term support and recovery to the failing heart. The typical length of support on the BVS 5000 is approximately 7-10 days.
As part of its ongoing commitment to customer education and support, ABIOMED is pleased to introduce a new online learning program for our products.
This web based learning module is designed to create an engaging experience to educate users, and then assess what they have learned. The courses include a set of interactive scenario-based simulations, allowing the clinician to demonstrate understanding of the clinical and functional aspects of ABIOMED's Circulatory Support Systems. The course provides a realistically complex – but risk free—practice environment to develop proficiency in the use of the system during acute clinical situations, such as post-cardiotomy shock and failed transplant support.
